MyJPlayer 1.3: A Minimalist Audio Player Written in Java

05.14.2010 · Posted in Audio Video

MyJPlayer

MyJPlayer is a minimalist audio player written entirely in Java, very immediate, easy to use and has some uncommon features such as automatic download of song lyrics.

The following features.

Card Player:

At the left is a simple library that shows the title, artist, album and song file that is currently running. The controls for the management of playlists can be accessed via the menu “Playlist”:

  • Add one or more files
  • Add an entire folder
  • Remove the selected song
  • Remove all tracks
  • Save the playlist to a file
  • Upload a file from the playlist

In any case, close the program, the playlist is automatically saved and loaded next open (auto playlist).

In this part right is the text editor that allows you to view and or modify the text of the song. To change the text of a song just click on the “Edit lyrics”. To save the modified text just click “Save.”

Finally there are the bottom of the player controls: position slider, volume, previous, play, next, pause, stop, volume (mute on / off). All commands can be invoked with the following key combinations:

  • Previous: Alt + A
  • Play: ALT + S
  • Next: Alt + D
  • Pause: ALT + F
  • Stop: ALT + G
  • Volume On / Off: ALT + H

Library Card:

On the left side of this card is the library shows the following columns: title, artist, album, Played (ie number of times you ran the track) files. All columns are sortable in ascending or descending order.

The commands to interact with the library are present in the menu “Library”:

  • Add one or more files
  • Add an entire folder
  • Remove the selected song
  • Remove all tracks
  • Export text to a file. Db
  • Import text from a file. Db

By checking “Auto download lyrics,” every time the songs will be added to the library, the program will try to automatically retrieve the texts from the Internet. This process can be more or less quickly depending on the speed of our connection. To improve the chances of finding the text is necessary to verify the files that we have completed adding fields artist, title and album. Clarification: the texts downloaded will not be added to files in any way (eg through ID3Tag) but will only be stored in the library database.

The functionality of export / import of texts are useful in case we wanted to share the lyrics (who may have written or modified in person) with others, or to create a backup if we want to delete and recreate the library again.

At the right is a simple viewer that displays ID3Tag additional information on the selected track.  The songs in the library can be added to the playlist simply by double clicking or pressing enter on your keyboard. Finally at the top of this library has a search box with the following characteristics:

  • Full text search in real time
  • Research in the fields title, artist, album, text
  • Ability to search this whole sentence in a text of a song (useful if you do not remember the title of a song but only, for example, the chorus)

Specifications:

  • Supported formats: WAV, AU, AIFF, MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, Monkey’s Audio, and Speex
  • Database library created by SQLITE
  • No limit to number of files or folders that you can add
  • Completely portable is not necessary to install anything
  • Tested on Windows and Linux
  • Online services currently used to find the lyrics: azlyrics.com, darklyrics.com (is in preparation for adding a service for texts in Italian)
  • External libraries used: SQLiteJDBC, BasicPlayer APIs

The program is distributed in zip format.

Extracting the zip file you get: a folder “lib” and containing the necessary libraries used by the program, folder “databases” containing the main database and the auto playlist, and then the executable MyJPlayer.jar.
