Guitar tools is a multi-platform program to help guitar players of any style. It’s a learning tool which helps you finding scales, chords, harmony and practicing.
Installation is pretty simple ! You just need to unzip the archive and to drop the “GuitarTools” folder in “Applications” on Mac System, in “Programs Files” under Windows.
The GuitarTools “Favorites folder” has been already created for your convenience, and you can drop inside your preferred tunes for practicing ( aliases and shortcuts are supported ).
Main Tab
The Main Window. It consists of three panels, each panel showing the guitar neck, the tuning menu, the tonality box, the degrees grid. First panel shows Scales, the second one shows Chords, and the third shows Diatonic scales or how to play scales with chords !
You change tonality by clicking on the tonality list you want to use.
Tuning
You can easily change the tuning.
Neck
You can customize the neck apparence
Playing
If the Play buton is checked, the scale or chord will be palyed with the guitar sound selected. You can change the sound in the menu and adjust the volume.
The Degree Grid
Depending on the panel, it will show the notes in scale, the notes in chord, or the name of the diatonic chords. For example, these are the notes in a GM7 chord.
The Tools Window
You make the Circle of fifths and fourths appear with the “Window” menu.
The metronome
Well, just click on “Start” and adjust the beat ! You can also select the time signature.
The favorites folder
The favorites folder can handle files and aliases or shortcuts on Window. Every file you ‘ll add in this folder will have his name in the favorites menu. Just select it and click on the “Play Button” to practice along the tune ! The tune will play in boucle until you stop it !
The Circle Window
You make the Circle of fifths and fourths appear with the “Window” menu.
It displays the circle of fifths and fourths. When the checkbox is enabled, the circle will follow the tonality chosen in the main window. If not checked, the circle will stay unchanged even if Tonality is modified in the main window.
Diatonic Scales panel
Diatonic scales is a way of playing scales with chords. GuitarTools helps you finding out Chords positions among 6 renversements. Some renversements are not playable for a normal human being… Although, Tommy might be able, but is he a real human guitar player Anyway, I find them quite useful to try some unusual voicings or sound combinaisons.
THe picture bellow shows the very classic G diatonic scale on the bottom cordes. The chords are : G7M, Am7, Bm7, C7M, D7, Em7 and F#m7b5.
Each chord matches the color degree. So, in this example, the GM7 is in red, and the D7 in yellow. You can change colors by clicking on the degrees grid.
The rest of us should try to play the chords scales with the easiest voicing, that means when you don’t have to stretch your hand to far ! In this panel, the color will match the entire chord to play while respecting the degree of the chord.
You can also choose among 6 fingerings by clicking on the little diagrams. This gives you plenty of combinaisons to try.
